From life-prolonging yogurts to non-allergenic peanuts, teams of researchers from all over the world have descended on UCC with the common goal of creating scientific magic.

Nine companies, including two from Ireland, have taken up residency in the labs of University College Cork looking for answers to questions that just a few years ago seemed beyond even the most advanced researchers, as part of a world-first synthetic biology accelerator programme for high-potential start-ups.

A team of UCC graduates, Sothic Bioscience, are hoping that by developing artificial blood they can save the endangered Horseshoe Crab, thousands of which are harvested and bled for use in pharmaceutical testing each year.
