Prison not ready to take disabled paedophile

A wheelchair-user paedophile sentenced to five years for indecent assault was transported to Castlerea Prison — and then brought home again — because he could not be accommodated at the jail this week.

Prison not ready to take disabled paedophile

Martin Davoren, aged 61, from Corcullen, Moycullen, Co Galway, remained at home last night despite having been convicted at Galway Circuit Criminal Court last week of sexually abusing a girl.

Davoren is a wheelchair user who has been paralysed from the waist down since he was involved in a road traffic accident when he was 22.

He was due to commence a five-year custodial sentence on Tuesday and was transported to Castlerea Prison in a specially adapted vehicle after presenting himself at Galway courthouse.

He could not be accommodated by prison authorities due to his disability and medical needs, however, and was immediately transported back to his home in Galway again.

The 150km round trip occurred despite Judge Rory McCabe putting a stay on Davoren’s sentence last Friday to afford prison authorities time to prepare for his incarceration.

Davoren had pleaded guilty to 12 sample charges of indecently assaulting a girl on dates between September 1, 1986, and July 31, 1988, when the victim was between 13 and 15 years of age.

Davoren was interviewed in relation to the crimes while in hospital, where he was suffering from an MRSA infection, as a complication of other, more life-threatening illnesses.

It is understood that efforts are continuing to make arrangements at Castlerea Prison to accommodate Davoren so he can begin his five-year sentence.

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service said the organisation does not comment on individual prisoners and could not provide any information or details in relation to this case.
