Waterford-born singer and TV entertainer Val Doonican, who became a household name in Ireland and Britain, has died aged 88.

Wearing trademark Aran jumpers, he had millions of fans through his television series, The Val Doonican Show which ran from 1965 until 1986. The series also featured guest singers.

Among the highlights of his 60-year career, he had five successive top 10 albums in the UK Album Chart in the 1960s.
