Experienced arts administrator Eibhlín Gleeson has been appointed the new chief executive of Cork Opera House.

Cork Opera House seeks continuity with new CEO

Ms Gleeson’s appointment, confirmed last night, is effective from October when current CEO Mary Hickson’s contract ends. Ms Hickson is planning to pursue other opportunities.

Ms Gleeson, who has been the theatre’s general manager since 2012, has extensive experience as a senior arts administrator over the last 13 years.

She was the CEO of Ireland’s flagship professional choir, Chamber Choir Ireland, and she developed and managed her own arts management company, EMG Arts Management, providing strategic planning, marketing, fundraising, and international touring services to arts organisations in Ireland.

She held a prestigious position in the John F Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts in Washington DC, where she worked with international leaders in the field of arts management.

She is also a musician, singer, and performer in her own right, having graduated from UCC’s Department of Music, and performing recently in the chorus of the Cork Operatic Society’s production of Faust.

“I am honoured and privileged to be asked to take on this position,” she said.

“I look forward to leading the fantastic team to deliver an Opera House that puts the people of this region at the centre of all it does.

“We will continue to develop the incredible artistic programme that has been put in place and work towards promoting the boundless artistic strengths available to us from local, national and international talent.”

Her appointment was announced last night by the theatre’s board of management. Chairman Damian Wallace said Ms Gleeson will bring a wide skillset and significant and diverse experience to the role. “Over the last number of years, in her role as general manager, Eibhlín has demonstrated a unique insight into the Opera House and is familiar with the innermost workings of the business,” he said.

“She has played a key part with the rest of the team over the last few years in the transformation of the company and she now takes the helm at a very exciting time for Cork Opera House.”

Paying tribute to the outgoing CEO, Mr Wallace said Ms Hickson’s vision, dedication, and belief in Cork Opera House, and her strategic approach to programming, had ensured its transformation into a world-class venue.
