Eight candidates are preparing to contest the general election over the threat to hundreds of rural and urban post office services.

The group claim Government policies are tearing the hearts out of local communities and forcing customers towards the commercial banks, which will lead to major post office closures.

Seona O’Fegan, postmistress at Barna and the Fr Griffin Road post office in Galway city, said she would be putting her name forward in the Galway West constituency in a bid to highlight the need for key community services to be retained, despite continuing Government pressures to cut back.
