Charity status bids by 19 groups refused

What do the organisers of a sheep-shearing competition, investigative journalists and the operators of garde allotments all have in common?

The unlikely combination of groups have all been refused their applications for charitable status in recent years by the tax authorities.

Figures provided by the Revenue Commissioners show that a total of 19 applicants have been refused charitable tax exemption since 2013.
