Two gardaí ‘assaulted by teen in domestic incident’

This evidence was given by Inspector Ronan Kenneally at Cork District Court yesterday.

Jonathan Carmody, aged 19, of 7 Deanvale, Togher, Cork, pleaded guilty to assaulting Garda Orla Leahy and Garda Donal O’Connell. He also admitted being drunk and a source of danger to himself or others, being threatening and abusive and obstructing Gda O’Connell.

On September 19, 2014, gardaí were called to the scene of a disturbance at the accused’s family home. The defendant’s father told gardaí that Jonathan was acting very aggressively.

Carmody then came out of the house punching and kicking at Garda O’Connell.

“He was highly aggressive as well as punching and kicking at Gda O’Connell he caught Gda Leahy in an arm-lock and they ended up on the ground,” Insp Kenneally said.

“He caught his legs around her neck and was highly aggressive. Efforts had to be made to extricate him from this assault.”

Defence solicitor Frank Buttimer said: “He is a 19-year-old man living at home. It was his father who called the guards, along with other family members. It was a family event resulting in a fight where they ended up having to call the guards. It was a nasty enough incident.

The defendant’s father, Patrick Dunphy, said: “Jonathan has a lot of emotional stuff going on. He has not had drink for about seven months. He does not realise how serious things are.”

Judge Olann Kelleher put sentencing back until tomorrow as a probation report was sought in relation to another case against Carmody for that date.
