Munster Rugby opens Musgrave to GAA fans for schools competition

History will be made next week when Munster Rugby’s Musgrave Park hosts its first GAA games.

Munster Rugby has agreed to stage several of the Allianz Sciath na Scol hurling and camogie finals over three days from next Monday as demolition work gets under way on the €70m redevelopment of Pairc Uí Chaoimh — the competition’s usual venue.

The 26-match competition will also be played at CIT and Nemo Rangers.

Throw-in for the first hurling game in Musgrave Park, between Scoil Nioclais and either Carrigaline boys national school or Togher boys national school, is at 10.30am on Monday.

The huge competition caters for around 400 primary schools with 7,000 children playing annually; about 1,400 are expected to line out in the finals.

Munster Rugby chief executive Garrett Fitzgerald said they are delighted to host the completion.

“Cork has a fine tradition across many different sporting pursuits and I am delighted that Munster and Sciath na Scol can work in tandem in hosting what I know will be another successful and enjoyable event for students, teachers, and fans alike,” he said.

Sciath na Scol PRO Séamus O’Connor thanked Munster Rugby for stepping in.

“The children who are lucky enough to be playing will benefit from testing their skills on a world-class playing surface,” said Mr O’Connor.

A break in the stadium’s rugby calendar has allowed it to host the Sciath na Scol finals and a concert with Katherine Jenkins and Jose Carreras on June 20.
