Gerard Hogan, aged 32, of Raheen Square, Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick, and Dylan Hayes, aged 20, who has an address at The Crescent, Kilteragh, Dooradoyle, Limerick, are each accused of assaulting Shane Murphy, 31, at a house in The Grove Pallasgreen, Co Limerick, on April 30 last.

Both men are also charged with producing a knife while committing the alleged assault.

Shane Murphy, who was from Lee Estate in Limerick city, died after he was stabbed a number of times while attending a house party on Thursday night.

At a special sitting of Limerick District Court this Saturday evening, Judge Mary Larkin was told Mr Hayes replied “yeah” when he was charged at Henry Street Garda Station earlier yesterday.

The court heard Mr Hogan had nothing to say when charged.

Both defendants were granted legal aid and their solicitors indicated they would not be applying for bail, but would make applications next week.

Judge Larkin noted this and remanded both men in custody until tomorrow morning.
