Councils urged to show ‘a bit of latitude’ on late rates

A judge yesterday urged county councils to “show a small bit of latitude” when it comes to pursuing businesses for rates after a dozen businesses including a creche, a gym and two restaurants were prosecuted for non-payment or arrears in rates of more than €163,000 by Kerry County Council.

At Tralee District Civil Court Judge James O’Connor said councils “won’t go broke”.

Meanwhile, figures revealed by the council on foot of a request after the court, show rates amounting to more than €9m were owed. This is believed to be a historic high.
