Pacteau to appear in court today

A man is to appear in court today after the body of missing student Karen Buckley was discovered on farmland.

Police arrested 21-year-old Alexander Pacteau in connection with the death of the 24-year-old nurse, from Mourneabbey, Co Cork, who disappeared following a night out in Glasgow.

Pacteau was formally arrested and is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today.

Shortly after 4pm yesterday, police confirmed the remains found were those of Karen Buckley. The 24-year-old went missing after leaving Glasgow’s Sanctuary nightclub on Sunday morning.

In a statement read by Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr, her father John said the family were “absolutely heartbroken” by the news that remains found on farmland outside the city were that of their only daughter.

Det Supt Kerr, the officer leading the inquiry, thanked the public for their support during the massive hunt.

“I can now confirm that the body discovered by officers at the farm in north Glasgow last night is that of Karen Buckley. Her family have been made aware. We cannot imagine the pain and suffering of Karen’s family and friends and all our thoughts are with them at this very sad and distressing time.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the public and the communities both here and in Ireland for their significant assistance during this investigation. It was very, very helpful.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the news media for their sustained effort and support throughout this inquiry.

“We cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering of Karen’s family and friends and all our thoughts are with them at this very sad time.”

Police remained at the farm yesterday, with several officers standing guard. The area is around eight miles from the Sanctuary nightclub.
