John Joe Nevin pub ban ahead of court date

Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin has been barred from every pub in Co Westmeath pending a court case following a brawl outside a bar earlier this week.

Nevin, 25, of 7 St Anthony’s Cottages, Mullingar, was one of five members of his extended family to appear before Mullingar District Court yesterday.

He was charged with being drunk in a public place and with threatening and abusive behaviour.

Judge Seamus Hughes was told further charges may arise from an incident which involved up to 25 people fighting outside a pub earlier this week.

David Nevin, 24, from 4 The Moorings, Ballymahon Road, Mullingar; Joseph Nevin, 19, 7 Grange Meadows, Mullingar; Paddy Nevin, 20, 7 St Anthony’s Cottages, Mullingar; and Christopher Nevin, 22, 12 Grange Park, Mullingar, also appeared before the court. They were remanded on bail to appear again before Mullingar District Court on May 21.

A number of bail conditions were imposed but Judge Hughes said these would be temporarily lifted to allow John Joe Nevin to go abroad to train or to facilitate him here if the prosecuting garda saw fit.

The court was told by Sgt Damien Connaughton that between 20-25 people were involved in the fight which broke out, outside The Stillery pub on Dominick Street in the town centre, around 11.30pm on Monday night.

John Joe Nevin was not present yesterday morning when the case was called at Mullingar District Court. Solicitor Patricia Cronin said her client was away training but would be present in court at 2pm.

Judge Hughes yesterday morning remanded the other four Nevin family members on €100 bail to May 21 and then dealt with John Joe Nevin when court resumed in the afternoon.

Nevin, wearing blue shorts and a blue T-shirt, did not speak during the brief hearing. Judge Hughes also remanded him on €100 bail and imposed the same bail conditions as the other four Nevins.

They included not entering any licensed premises, including supermarket off-licences, in Co Westmeath until the case was heard on May 21; remain alcohol and drug free; not have possession of intoxicating liquor; and observe a curfew from 11pm to 8am.
