The Government has been accused of being “all over the place” with its attempts to try and get a grip on the mortgage debt crisis.

Fianna Fáil finance spokesman Michael McGrath called for greater clarity and urgency in dealing with the situation as he warned 31,000 households were now in danger of repossession.

Mr McGrath said the Government was spinning ideas without given a platform of support. With the Government signalling its revamped mortgage policy, to be unveiled in the next two weeks, may have measures where the State tops up some payments by people in financial difficulty, Mr McGrath said it sounded like a relaunch of a scheme ministers had moved to shut down.
