The body representing the country’s prison officers has expressed its disappointment at the Irish Prison Service’s decision to conduct an internal report into Derek Brockwell’s escape from Tallaght Hospital.

The Prison Officers Association met with the Irish Prison Service director general, Michael Donnellan, yesterday to discuss Tuesday’s escape, when Brockwell stabbed two prison guards who had escorted him from Portlaoise prison to Tallaght Hospital.

Jim Mitchell, deputy general secretary of the Prison Officers Association, said they are requesting an external investigation be carried out into Brockwell’s escape and a review of procedures in light of the incident.
