Ban on baby gender choice

Parents using assisted human reproduction will be banned from choosing the sex of their babies under laws planned by the Government. Legislation will also make it illegal to pay for surrogate mothers.

Health Minister Leo Varadkar briefed Cabinet colleagues yesterday about the planned legislation.

This will for the first time address the complex area of assisted human reproduction, surrogacy as well as in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
