The theme of violence was a poignant tone at the funeral Mass of Bernard McGinley, who died from gunshot wounds at a wedding in Co Fermanagh last week.

Fr Turlough Baxter said violence was not an answer. “It takes such a short time to open wounds in others that can take a lifetime to heal,” he told mourners at the funeral Mass in Athlone of the 63-year-old.

There was a low-key, but visible, Garda presence at the funeral with uniformed officers backed up by the Armed Support Unit.
