It’s been dubbed the worst street in Ireland, inflicting broken bones on pedestrians and a lot of damage to vehicles.

But that’s about to become a thing of the past because within the next fortnight work will start on a €2.47m upgrade of footpaths and the main road leading through Buttevant, Co Cork.

It came to a head last year when due to the uneven surface a lorry shed its load close to a primary school. Locals staged a mass protest which held up rush-hour traffic in the main street, which is part of the main Cork-Limerick road.
