The mother-of-two said she had a string of disasters during her own two pregnancies which were perfect material for her character who discovers she is expecting a baby in her eagerly anticipated series Catastrophe which is being tipped to be one of the biggest TV shows of the year.

The TV funnywoman has teamed up with Rob Delaney — America’s most influential Twitter comedian — to make the single camera romantic comedy about an Irish woman and an American man who make a mess of their struggle to fall in love in London.

“It’s an unromantic look at a romance. It’s about a couple who meet on a one night stand, and end up spending this great week together, and that should be it. But she gets pregnant, and he decides to do what he thinks is the right thing and stuck around.”

The 44-year-old actress, who has two daughters Sadhbh, 10, and Amer, 6, said her recollections of her pregnancies provided inspiration for the character. “I would say the (pregnancies) were pretty tricky. You ask any woman who’s been through it.

There won’t be too many rosy stories in there. I got knocked over by my dog and broke my knee. My pelvis parted, so I was on crutches for most of it.

“My second one, my ribs felt like they were splitting because my baby was so massive. A lot went wrong — which is why we were able to throw that all in there.”“I know there are women out there who loved being pregnant, but that wasn’t my experience.”

The in-demand star – who is the sister of ex-Irish rugby player Shane Horgan – lives in London with husband Jeremy and two daughters. ‘Catastrophe’ starts next Monday, January 19, at 10pm on Channel 4.
