A thousand euro has been collected for St Vincent de Paul in Tralee this weekend after the town’s leading citizens took part in office chair racing.

All the chairs had wheels and in order to win a race, the competitors “had to keep their bottoms firmly on the seat of the chair and only use their legs to propel themselves forward towards the finish line,” according to the instructions issued to the 18 taking part.

The race “took off” from the aptly named Neil Armstrong way at Siamsa the National Folk theatre, but it was less about rocket science than about staying grounded as Labour TD Arthur Spring joked he was “always minding” his seat as he clung on past the finishing line.
