Short-term solution to Kerry’s grave shortage

A short-term solution to resolving problems arising from a shortage of burial plots in Killarney, Co Kerry, has been announced by Kerry County Council.

An extra 100 spaces are to be made available at the public graveyard in Aghadoe, outside the town, creating burial space for around two years.

An emergency meeting of Killarney Municipal on Wednesday seeking clarification on the council’s plans to purchase a private cemetery adjoining the public cemetery in Aghadoe.

However, Independent Cllr Brendan Cronin, who called the meeting, has confirmed he will be asking council management to instead go about acquiring alternative land, which is available for purchase close to Killarney town, for a new public cemetery.

The council said its burials unit has assessed the Aghadoe cemetery and estimated it will provide an additional 100 burial spaces.

Meanwhile, Kerry County Council is proposing to materially contravene its own development plan to allow a controversial roadway through a sensitive area into the ancient Oakwoods at Tomies mountain in the western edge of Lough Leane, the biggest of the Killarney lakes.
