Motorist, 24, clocks up 133-year road ban

A 24-year-old Limerick motorist with cumulative driving bans totalling 93 years has clocked up a further 40 years of disqualifications at Limerick District Court.

Jonathan Curtin pleaded guilty to two offences, adding to the 154 convictions he already had, including 20 related to driving without insurance.

Curtin, of Yeats Avenue, Kincora Park, currently serving six months, admitted driving without insurance and giving a false name to Garda Dermot Cummins at Milford Rd on April 14.

John Devane, for Curtin, said the accused was a changed man since becoming a father 10 months ago. He said Curtin had put pen to paper to say he did not want to see his son grow up visiting his father in jail. Judge Eugene O’Kelly said the most recent offence had occurred since the birth.

Mr Devane said Curtin was now a daddy and the prospect of not seeing his son outside of a prison was an appalling prospect.

Judge O’Kelly: “When driving around without insurance does he think of the consequences for other daddies if he is involved in an accident without insurance and people are hurt.”

He imposed two five-month consecutive sentences, suspended, and two disqualifications from driving totalling 40 years.
