Island’s 100 residents bask in balmy October weather

Residents of Sherkin Island, just across from the fishing village of Baltimore in West Cork, enjoyed the warmest weather in the country last month.

The 4.8km-long tourist retreat, with a population of around 100, experienced an average daily temperature of 12C during October.

However, Met Éireann yesterday reported it was “wet and warm” in many locations last month.

Johnstown Castle in Wexford had its wettest October since 2002, with 196.7mm of rainfall. Fermoy in Cork recorded its wettest October in 10 years, with 153.6mm of rainfall.

Met Éireann’s monthly weather charts show that Cork Airport recorded the month’s wettest day for the whole country on October 5, with 38.6mm of rain. It had been the wettest October at the airport for five years.

Met Éireann said warm temperatures were recorded across the country but were highest in the east, south-east, and south.

Phoenix Park in Dublin was the driest part of the country, with 80.9mm of rainfall recorded. The park was also the warmest place in the country on October 31, with an air temperature of 19.4C.

Knock Airport in Mayo experienced the lowest average monthly temperature at 9.8ºC last month, but Mullingar, Co Westmeath, was the coldest place to be on October 29, when the air temperature plummeted to -1C.

Both Mullingar and Gurteen, Co Tipperary, recorded the lowest minimum temperatures at -4.9C on October 29.

It was sunniest in Dublin Airport, with 115.3 hours of sunshine recorded compared to Knock Airport which had the lowest monthly total at 79.8 hours.

Dublin Airport had 10 hours of sunshine on October 11 — the highest daily amount over the month and its sunniest October day since 2006.

It was also a breezy month, with many coastal areas experiencing their windiest October conditions in six years. Speeds ranged from 11km/h at Fermoy to 32km/h at Mace Head in Galway.

Gale-force winds were reported on 10 days, with the highest gusts at 117km/h reported at Roche’s Point in Cork Harbour on October 5 and at Malin Head in Donegal on October 21 — their highest for October in 10 and six years respectively.
