Dublin GAA star Jonny Cooper was asleep and defenceless as he was repeatedly stabbed in the face and neck in a frenzied knife attack, a court has heard.

The 24-year-old was rushed to the Mater Hospital and required stitches after an incident in the early hours of September 20, at Dorset St Upper.

Yesterday, the accused, Mark Lavelle, aged 31, from Bollingbrook, Swinford, Co Mayo, but with an address at Basin St, Dublin 8, was refused bail by Judge John Lindsay at Cloverhill District Court. He had been charged last week with assault causing harm to the Na Fianna footballer.
