Revenue is considering on-the-spot inspections of homes around the country to ensure their owners are paying the right amount of property tax.

It comes after its own estimates forced more than 1m people to revalue their home for the property tax.

The 2013 annual report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) also shows that about €95m was still outstanding in payments for the household charge, the levy for homeowners introduced in 2012 before the property tax itself.
