Man flashed his backside and threatened garda wives with rape

A teenager put the middle finger of both hands up to gardaí and then threw stones at them, flashed his backside and threatened that he would rape their wives.

That was the scenario met by gardaí responding to a call from residents about a group of youths causing a disturbance in The Glen in Cork city.

Inspector Mary King described the background circumstances to the case at Cork District Court where 18-year-old PJ Meehan of 112 Comeragh Park, The Glen, pleaded guilty to two counts of engaging in threatening behaviour and one count of causing criminal damage to a Garda patrol car.

The incident occurred on March 1 when gardaí got a call about a disturbance in progress after 12am. When they arrived Meehan stuck up both middle fingers and shouted: “Fuck ye, pigs.”

“He threw stones and small rocks at gardaí,” said Insp King. “The gardaí summoned assistance. He continued to shout at gardaí from a distance and exposed his backside on a number of occasions. He shouted: ‘I’ll rape your wives.”

“Gardaí attempted a apprehend him. He ran towards the North Ring Road. Again he was throwing stones at the Mayfield patrol car which was moving at the time.

“He damaged emergency lighting on the Garda car.”

Michael Quinlan, solicitor, said: “He accepts the facts as set out. He has not had a drink since this except once on the occasion of his uncle’s funeral.”

The solicitor said the defendant was hanging around with a gang and drinking at the time and that things got out of hand.

Judge Con O’Leary said the defendant told his probation officer he felt victimised by the guards so he was standing up for himself, in his view.

Mr Quinlan said this was Meehan’s first time in trouble.

Judge O’Leary put him on a probation bond for nine months on the criminal damage charge at North Ring Road and fined him €100 on each of the threatening charges at Arderrin Way and Mangerton Close in The Glen.
