More drivers are still opting to change a car at the start of the year, with the bulk of new motor sales recorded in the first three months, despite the introduction of the dual registration system.

While a new peak in sales emerged during July when the second stage of registration was available, the dual-reg system, introduced in 2013, has badly affected sales at the end of the year, especially in December.

The data came in a new survey which compared quarterly car registrations for the past two years against the quarterly average of the previous five years.
