More than one in 40 children born in Cork and Kerry suffer from a congenital anomaly, according to new research.

Figures published by the HSE show a total of 1,623 children were born with some form of congenital disorder in the two counties between 2006 and 2011 — an annual rate of 270 cases.

It equates to around 2.6% of all births in Cork and Kerry over the period.
