Cork’s newest private hospital to add 150 jobs

The chief executive of Cork’s newest hospital has said that management at the facility can foresee further significant job announcements in the coming years.

Speaking at the announcement of 150 new jobs over two years at the Mater Private Cork, Anna Fitzgerald said that management expect a further expansion of the facility in the future.

“In two years’ time I can see that we would be offering the same amount of jobs here in the Mater Private in Cork,” Ms Fitzgerald said yesterday as Taoiseach Enda Kenny visited the hospital for the announcement.

“Of the 150 jobs that we are currently recruiting, about 75 of those would be nurses. The rest will be consultant and allied health professionals. Ninety percent of those will be post-graduate roles and the rest would be support services such as catering and cleaning,” she said.

The €70m investment will see the workforce grow from 100 to 250 over the next two years.

Mr Kenny said the announcement was a further example of confidence returning to the country.

“What we want to do with the forthcoming budget and the ones after that is to build on those foundations,” he said.

“So that you can become competitive, attractive for investment, where you can become a location where people want to have their careers, where we can have the opportunity to bring back numbers of those young people who left in the last number of years. That’s where I see our country and this announcement here in the Mater Private Hospital in Cork is part of that philosophy.”

The hospital is part of the City Gate business park in Mahon, and Mr Kenny recalled visiting Cork three years ago to turn the sod on the site with developer John Cleary.

“It was the only rock-breaker in Munster that was operating at the time and he said ‘people think I’m daft to do what I’m doing here’. But 3,000 jobs in this City Gate speaks for itself. This would still be a field growing, fallow ground, but for the vision that you have put together,” he said.

Meanwhile in other jobs announcements yesterday, software provider Sidetrade opened its new office in Dublin, with the creation of 90 skilled roles over two years and retailer Aldi opened a new store in Wexford Town creating 20 jobs.
