The number of trips by tourists to Ireland rose by 12.3% from April to June this year, compared with the same period last year, figures show.

The latest CSO statistics point to a major resurgence for the tourism industry, with the number of holidaymakers rising by 7% in the first six months of 2014, with growth particularly strong among British and American visitors.

The increase was warmly welcomed yesterday by Tourism Ireland
