According to the company its main aim is to “develop an interim design for a public transport interchange” at Kent Station.
Opening up a quayside entrance and what is known as ‘the back car park’ will enable the station to be serviced by more bus routes.
Iarnród Éireann’s business development manager Andrew Roche said, at present, the station has bus links every 10 minutes at peak times to the city centre, UCC, CUH and CIT and it also has a regular service to and from Cork Airport.
He said opening up an entrance on the Horgan’s Quay side would enable more bus routes to be facilitated and additional space for taxis and drop-off points.
This will further enhance and develop the existing facilities at Kent Station to improve accessibility to and from the Bus Station and city centre in general, which complement the city council’s overall planning goal.
The company is not going ahead with an earlier plan to rotate the concourse.
However, it is planning two new entrance buildings on the quayside which will be connected to the southern end of the station’s existing underpass.
The buildings will incorporate customer information systems, public address, ticket vending, seating, commercial advertising, provision for potential future retail outlets.
A new road linking Railway Street/Alfred Street and Horgan’s Quay serving the new entrance buildings which will include partial demolition of existing protected perimeter stone wall.
The new road will incorporate traffic lights, traffic calming features, pavements, bus stops with shelters, cycle parking with shelters and taxi set-down. Street lighting, bollards, storm water drainage and perimeter railings.
As part of the project, Iarnród Éireann plans to open a 140-space pay and display car park on the quayside and will carry out repairs to the goods’ depot, on both the eastern and northern façade, as well as repairs to the signal cabin.
The company, it emerges, is to lodge a planning application later this week with Cork City Council.
If all goes according to plan, it is hoped a detailed design will be completed by November with a Spring date for tendering.
December 2016 has been pencilled in for completion of the project.
