Philomena to address adoption conference

The conference, which is supported by the Irish Research Council, is a joint venture between the School of Applied Social Studies and the Faculty of Law at the university and aims to explore the opportunities and challenges in Irish adoption.
Adoption law and practice in Ireland has been undergoing a significant period of transition in recent years, particularly with the onset of the children’s rights movement.
The opening address will be given by Labour’s Anne Ferris who is an adopted person and who had her own daughter adopted when she was 16 years of age.
Other speakers include Susan Lohan of the Adoption Rights Alliance; Dr Pien Bos of the University of Humanistic Studies in Utrecht; Dr Peter Selman, Newcastle University; international consultant on child protection, Nigel Cantwell, and Judge Rosemary Horgan, President of the District Court, among others.
