Gardaí believe a young airline pilot, who died after collapsing at the wheel of his car an hour after landing a 72-seat passenger plane at Shannon, may have suffered a sudden medical trauma.

Denis Metcalfe, aged 25, from Copstown Cross, Mallow, Co Cork, was driving home from Shannon when his car went into a ditch at Banogue near Croom on the N20, at around 11.50pm.

Gardaí said indications are that the impact had nothing to do with Mr Metcalfe’s death.
