Irish citizens still in Libya have been urged to make their way to the capital Tripoli in preparation for possible evacuation by sea next Tuesday.

A Maltese ferry company that normally runs services between Malta and Italy is seeking permission to dock at Tripoli port to offer around 300 passengers a safe way out of the growing violence.

Tickets for the six-hour trip back to Malta with Virtu Ferries are €1,000 each and passengers will only be able to bring essential belongings as the vehicle-carrying capacity of the company’s fleet is low.
