Puppet festival welcomes all — no strings attached

If you’ve ever fancied trying your hand at puppetry then head along to Cork’s first Puppetry Festival.

Puppet festival welcomes all — no strings attached

Details of the festival will be fully revealed at its launch in the Crane Lane tomorrow night where people will be able to watch a free puppet show and get the chance to learn to how to manipulate puppets themselves.

The inaugural puppetry festival will take place from August 20- 24 in various locations around the city and will include both local and travelling acts.

The festival also encompasses workshops, performances for both adults and children and an adults-only night-time puppetry cabaret.

The four-day event will culminate in a free day of family fun in Fitzgerald’s Park.

Dublin’s International Puppetry Festival finished up in 2011, leaving Ireland without a puppetry festival until now that is.

The Cork Puppetry Festival is the brainchild of puppeteers Cliff Dolliver and Davy Dummigan, and is expected to become an annual event.

“We’re very excited by the quality of the shows and events that will be on offer,” Cliff Dolliver said.

“As well as performances, everything from the classic Punch and Judy to more modern and experimental pieces, we are really looking forward to hosting educational workshops on puppet-making and manipulation,” he said.

Mr Dolliver said puppetry is a fantastic art form and really engages every side of human creativity, from sculpting and textiles to performing and vocal skills.

“The festival will really have something for everyone, with plenty for both kids and adults. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” he said.

lThe festival launch will take place from 6-7.30pm tomorrow at the Crane Lane Theatre and children are welcome.
