The annual Rose of Tralee is a bit like Marmite, Bovril, or the Eurovision — you either love it or hate it. There’s no in-between.

Most of us love it, with the festival ranked as one of the most watched RTÉ programmes of 2013, with three out of five Irish adults tuning in every August to watch the craic, the frocks, and the occasional slip.
