Stylish jobs on offer for hairdressers in Canada
Thirty Irish stylists will be making their way to Canada in the next few weeks to begin new lives and careers after taking up job offers in a country with a chronic shortage of hairdressers.
Now the search is on to find 80 more to join them as the Diamond Global Recruitment Group, which oversaw recruiting days here last March, is returning with more opportunities in the western provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Colombia.
Interviews will be held in Cork, Dublin and Galway during the first week of August when candidates will be asked for hands-on demonstrations of their skills.
The last recruitment drive resulted in 30 stylists signing up for the Canadian work visa which also entitles their spouses or partners to work, and allows them apply for permanent residency in Canada after just one year.
They can expect to earn salaries of up to ā¬55,000 with tips and commission on product sales on top of that. But with western Canada undergoing massive economic growth, Sean Stewart, director of operations at Diamond Global in Toronto, said the potential for career development was unlimited.
Stephanie Sweeney, a 25-year-old stylist from Dublin who is moving to Regina, Saskatchewan, with her partner, Austin, said: āItās been a dream of ours for a few years now and when the opportunity came up to interview in Ireland for a job there, I jumped at the chanceā.
Regina, the provincial capital of Saskatchewan, is a city of just over 200,000, slightly smaller than the provinceās largest city, Saskatoon, but both are about to get a lot bigger.
āBoth are cities that are growing and I would say they could double in size in the next 10 years,ā said Sean Stewart.
The jobs are with two expanding chains of salons.
