Two German motorcyclists injured in collision with car

The collision occurred at around 2.45pm at Mountrivers Bridge on the outskirts of Doonbeg on the main N67 road. The two motorbikes crashed head-on into a car driven by an American tourist. It’s understood the car clipped another vehicle before colliding with a bridge and then the two motorcycles.

One of the bikes became embedded in the front of the car while the second was thrown over the car.

The male motorcyclist is understood to have sustained multiple injuries, including fractures to both legs. His wife was also injured, but less seriously.

Ambulances from Kilrush and Ennis along with units of the fire brigade from Kilrush and Kilkee raced to the scene.

They were both taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.

The injured were part of a group of six motorcyclists from southern Germany that had been touring Ireland for the past week.

One of the motorcycle group said: “They were very lucky. We were all very lucky. The car came over the bridge and hit them. I think they are American tourists. We have been here for six days and should be going home on Saturday. We are getting the ferry from Rosslare to France,” he said.

Gardaí at Kilrush are investigating the collision.

Earlier this month, two motorcyclists died in a collision, also on the N67, near Lisdoonvarna.
