It’s meant to be a landmark religious occasion, but First Holy Communion could double as a milestone in a child’s economic education if canny parents intervene.

The latest survey on spending and gifting for First Communions shows the gap between the amount children receive and the amount their parents spend on their big day is narrowing.

And with a little downward adjustment on the expenditure side, along with the introduction of a burden-sharing policy among the key stakeholders, communion celebrations could begin to pay for themselves.
