The Bishop of Cork and Ross has joined the Archbishop of Dublin in calling for an independent public inquiry into the deaths of children at religious-run mother-and-baby homes.

John Buckley’s comments come as the scandal shows no sign of abating with questions also being asked about forced adoptions and the use of children to test vaccines in homes such as Bessborough in Cork.

It is expected that the country’s bishops will discuss the continuing fallout during their three-day summer meeting which continues until tomorrow.
