Waste lorry overturns outside school

Gardaí say it was very fortunate that a lorry carrying building waste didn’t overturn half an hour later as it could have resulted in carnage.

Waste lorry overturns outside school

The lorry overturned shortly after 8am yesterday in a busy North Cork town and just feet from the front of a primary school.

The lorry had just negotiated a bend on the southern approach to MacCurtain Street, Fermoy, when it tipped over onto the footpath.

It was fortunate that there were no pedestrians in the area at the time and even more fortunate that it didn’t happen half an hour later when the first of the 330-pupils would arrive for school at Gaelscoil de hÍde.

Gardaí were quickly on the scene and ensured traffic was able to flow along both sides of the street during the rush-hour.

However, they had to reduce the flow to one lane between 1.30pm and 2.15pm as a crane arrived to re-right the vehicle.

Gardaí said that the lorry driver suffered no injuries.
