Golfer describes ‘wayward’ shot that hit woman

A golfer who hit the shot where a ball struck a woman on the head as she stood on a clubhouse balcony yesterday told the High Court it was a freak, wayward shot.

Patrick Trundle said his shot from the rough on the 18th hole of Old Conna Golf Club in Wicklow was “wayward beyond belief”.

“I was playing away from the clubhouse. If I had seen the flight of the ball heading towards the clubhouse I would have had an automatic reaction of shouting fore,” he said.
