Childers alleges bias in coverage

Independent candidate Nessa Childers has lodged a formal complaint with RTÉ alleging bias in its reporting of the European Election campaign.

Childers alleges bias in coverage

She took issue with a segment on the Six One News on Wednesday, where she felt the Green Party’s Dublin candidate was featured prominently.

“The RTÉ Six One News report, in my opinion, aired what was, in effect, an un- contested interview with only one Dublin European Parliament candidate, the Green Party’s Eamon Ryan. No other Dublin European Parliament candidate featured prominently in this news item,” she said.

Ms Childers said both she and People Before Profit candidate Bríd Smith were excluded from the report.

Meanwhile, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has found that the exclusion of two candidates from an RTÉ report on an opinion poll was “unfair”.

The BAI partially upheld a complaint by Socialist Party MEP Paul Murphy, Bríd Smith, and Patricia McKenna following RTÉ’s coverage of a Sunday Business Post/ Red C opinion poll on the 9 O’Clock News on May 3. Solicitors on behalf of the trio pointed out that RTÉ only highlighted candidates with over 10% of support in the poll, and that this led to the exclusion of Ms Smith and Mr Murphy.

RTÉ said it did not consider it was required to recite every result shown by the poll.
