Reilly must deliver value for money, says Burton

Social Protection Minister Joan Burton has delivered a stinging public rebuke to Health Minister James Reilly by insisting that she will not tolerate any more cuts to welfare spending to bail out the Department of Health.

Reilly must deliver value for money, says Burton

Concerned that almost €200m of the Social Protection budget has been hived off to fund over-runs in his department in the past two years, Ms Burton insisted it was now up to Dr Reilly to deliver the reforms needed to bring his budget under control.

She said she did not see the need for any cuts in social welfare in the October budget as her department had already shipped so much of its savings over to shore up the Department of Health.
