The teaching of religion in school is “not the highest thing on the agenda” of primary school teachers who are more concerned about pay and resources.

INTO general secretary Sheila Nunan made the comments in reaction to Education Minister Ruairí Quinn’s criticism of the pace at which Catholic leaders are putting forward ideas on how schools can be more inclusive of children of different faiths, and of no faith.

Mr Quinn told 800 INTO delegates in Kilkenny that, while he had “no wish to engage in culture wars, or to bring about division to Irish society”, the changing face of Irish society could not be ignored.
