Go-ahead for new Aldi store in Skibbereen

German discount store Aldi has secured planning permission for a 10,000sq ft (929sq m) supermarket in Skibbereen.

An Bord Pleanála (ABP) granted permission for the development at the Fairfield in the West Cork town centre this week with revised conditions attached.

The store will bring the number of supermarkets in the town to four — alongside discount rival Lidl, Spar, and Field’s Supervalu.

Mayor of Skibbereen Cllr Adrian Healy welcomed the ABP decision, which he says will provide additional choice for shoppers.

“There were a number of submissions made by different people. However, I think it will be good for the town. If the store doesn’t come to Skibbereen, it will go to some other town in Cork and that might draw shoppers away from Skibbereen.”

Concerns outlined in submissions include the impact of the development on local businesses and traffic.

Objector Ed Harper, a farmer and People Before Profit candidate in the upcoming local elections, said the development gave rise to a variety of concerns including a 7.5m right of way across the mart site in Skibbereen town centre. “I think the worst aspect is that it will damage the Skibbereen Farmer’s Market.”

The Aldi application was appealed by a number of objectors following Skibbereen Town Council’s decision to grant permission in July 2013.

Shead Properties initially applied for permission for a single-storey discount food with 72 car parking spaces; 13 bicycle stands, a loading bay, and ESB substation in June 2013.
