Men smuggled 40,000 cigarettes

Two Armagh men were arrested in Cork Airport smuggling in thousands of cigarettes they bought on a weekend away in Lanzarote.

Customs officers stopped the pair shortly before 12am on Saturday and discovered they were carrying 40,000 cigarettes on which no excise had been paid.

Raymond Glass, aged 43, of 95 Kilmore Rd, Armagh, was charged with carrying 15,800 cigarettes in his luggage at Cork Airport on the night of April 12. He faces charges of evasion of excise duty and the alternative charge of attempted evasion

Judge Leo Malone was told the potential loss to the state was €5,763.

Stephen McNulty, aged 29, of 56 Tullyherron Rd, Mountnorris, Armagh, was charged on similar counts. It was alleged he was carrying 24,200 cigarettes where the potential loss to the state was €8,785.

Diarmuid Kelleher, for the men, applied for bail on the basis they would plead guilty and attend court whenever required.

Judge Leo Malone refused bail and remanded both men in custody to appear at Cork District Court by video link from prison tomorrow.
