Profits fall at Mountjoy’s million-euro tuck shop

Bumper sales of cheese and onion crisps and bottles of Coca Cola were not enough to prevent profits tumbling at Mountjoy jail’s million-euro tuck shop.

The prison system’s busiest retail shop felt the chill winds of the recession last year as profits decreased by 49%, from €124,823 to €63,451.

It followed a 22% fall, over three years, of gross revenues at the tuck shop, decreasing from €1.3m in 2011 to €1.02m last year.
