Gardaí find €250k drug haul buried in woods

Teams of gardaí with sniffer dogs seized more than €250,000 of buried cannabis during searches of woodland on the outskirts of Cork.

The search was sparked by the arrest of a 35-year-old man following a surveillance operation at the woods at Kilclough, Vicarstown, 8km north-east of Blarney.

Surveillance on the area had been conducted by detectives from the Cork divisional drugs unit, based at Anglesea St, as part of a crackdown in the city and county.

On Tuesday, they saw a man remove cannabis which had been buried in the wood. The man, from Limerick but living in Cork, was arrested. Gardaí recovered 38kg of cannabis resin, with an estimated street value of €228,000.

A follow-up search with the aid of sniffer dogs yesterday uncovered a further 4kg worth €26,000.

The man was taken to Gurranabraher Garda Station and questioned under section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act 1996. He is due to appear at Cork district court at 10.30am this morning.
