Majella O'Donnell joins Twitter to post touching #NoMakeupSelfie for cancer awareness

Majella O'Donnell has added her voice to the #NoMakeupSelfie trend sweeping social media.

Majella, wife of singer Daniel O'Donnell, joined Twitter on Friday and posted a poignant image of herself to raise awareness about breast cancer.

The 53-year-old mother of two was diagnosed with cancer last year and underwent a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and a double mastectomy.

Majella has since raised over €600,000 for the Irish Cancer Society, even shaving her head on the Late Late Show in a bid to raise awareness of the disease.

In a statement on Daniel's website, Majella thanked the public for their overwhelming messages of support.

"What I want to tell you all at this stage is how very grateful I am to every one of you for everything you have done for me over the last few months. Please do not think that, because you haven’t heard from me, your kindness has gone unnoticed."

She also took to Twitter to say: "I know my 'no hair, no makeup selfie' is not very flattering but guess what? I don't give a fiddlers!!! I can live with it."

The #NoMakeupSelfie trend has gone viral on Twitter and Facebook in the past week since it launched last Wednesday.

Users are encouraged to post barefaced images of themselves, before nominating friends to do the same.

As a result, the Irish Cancer Society has reported a huge increase in donations in the past few days.

Initial figures indicate as much as €200,000 was raised in the first 24 hours of the campaign, while the total amount raised currently exceeds €650,000.
