Trump seals €15m deal to become Doonbeg owner

American business magnate Donald Trump Sr last night officially became owner of Doonbeg Lodge and Golf Club in Co Clare after his organisation completed a reported €15m purchase of the 400-acre resort.

Final contracts were signed yesterday evening by the property mogul’s sons and Trump Organisation executive vice presidents Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump to complete the purchase of the five-star resort and Greg Norman-designed 18-hole championship links course on the Atlantic coast from the official receivers.

“I’ve just been speaking to my boys and we’ve just closed, the money just got wired and it’s all official, so that’s very exciting,” Trump Sr told the Irish Examiner last night.

The resort is to be renamed the Trump International Golf Links, Ireland, and Trump Sr said he believed the investment he was planning for the property and golf course, which he plans to visit for the first time in four weeks, would benefit the local economy hugely.

“I think we’re going to have a huge effect. The world is talking about Doonbeg and before nobody talked about it. Now there’s international press and when we get it fully going it’s going to be spectacular. We’re going to create a lot of tourism and a lot of jobs.”
